That is a good theory. My second thought is that he comes from a family of River People, among whom Lionfish is an old an honorable name, indicating kinship with the great and ferocious gars of the Zola Fel. Clearly young Lionfish found that he was called to even older powers, doubtless to the confusion of his relatives.
Aha! That makes his path to Argan Argar much clearer. And fish-related names are quite likely in a coastal city as well. Though I’ll wafer his relatives still don’t know what to make of him. 🙂
Nothing quite like making a very good impression on your prospective employer first thing in the job interview, is there? ^_^
That said, It’s interesting to watch the sub-culture clash between the adventurers who are motivated by money and the Rebels who are motivated by politics play out as it does. 🙂
I tend to miss a lot of things in these (which I suspect is half the point – lots of very small subtle things involved), but I have a couple of questions.
A) I presume the crystals around Garrath’s neck are power crystals – is there a particular reason they’re blue? I’ve always imagined them as basically clear or cloudy quartz. And not shaped, as they are.
B) why is the woman of Vinga half drawing her sword? I’d take that is a really REALLY bad sign when you’ve been invited as a guest in someone’s home…
1. Those aren’t power crystals, they are something much more special. We’ll find out what later on.
2. Well, put yourself in her shoes. You get dragged to a gang-affiliated area of the town, late at night, into a room filled with people armed to the teeth, and one of them hears you whisper from across the room and calls out your companion *by name* even though none of you have ever met this guy or introduced yourselves.
If this doesn’t sound like a trap, I don’t know what does!
1) OIC,,, My only other thought would have been chips of the old Block (which I always imagined as closer to amber/topaz like, and again, not pointy)… but that may be a limitation on my Glorantha knowledge… they do rather toothy…(???)
2) ok… just not something my character would do, tis all. “I know your name”… so, you have good spies, or good magics, neither of which is unexpected.
If I may ask – is there are particular rule system this is based on? HQ or RQ? And if so, which variant? Or, a pictorial retelling of Greg’s myths? (yeah, I can be a rules-lawyer :p (Oddly, I’m part trickster as well … :D))
Still, VERY glad you guys are doing this! And VERY nice work!!!
Nope, no rules system, at least not any that I would consider it. Jeff might have one in mind when writing, but i also kind of doubt it. Ultimately, the comic is about Glorantha, not about RuneQuest or HeroQuest or any other game system.
Lionfish seems like a strange name for a follower of Argan Argar… but then, perhaps he is a fisher for lions…
Maybe he always wanted to be a sailor, but never had the knack for it?

That sounds quite good, however Lionfish is Esrolian. Not sure if he’s from Nochet proper, but he’s certainly from that queendom.

Nice work again!

That blue crystals are marked with the rune of the Dragons. I think I know what they are… but I won’t spoil the fun for the other readers :D.
And Garrath has a white rune in his belly. White. And Bull related, I think ;).
Lionfish may be fancy name for a “loan shark”.
I really like that theory!
This is, in fact, the closest anyone here’s gotten to the origin of this character’s name.
Is the rune on his shoulder the House of Sartar? Can’t really see enough of it.
His shoulder has a storm rune on it. But if you mean his left pec, then yes, that is Sartar’s rune.
between this and the previous page, it certaily looks like the House of Sartar rune
BTW, see the bottom right panel of http://www.princeofsartar.com/comic/5-argrath-faces-evil/
The Same runes in the same place, it’s Argrath, isn’t it?
I am not going to tell you, however I *will* point you towards the Characters tag underneath the page 🙂
Doh! And I only just noticed that Garrath is a blindingly obvious anagram…
not to mention the pointy nose…
